This free, easy-to-use website shares global and country-specific advice on crop health and pest management. The PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank links all actors in the plant health system to the information they need for timely action against crop pests and diseases. 

You can use it to: 

  • Identify a pest or diseases 
  • Explore country-specific resources 
  • Receive pest alerts 

The PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank is part of the CABI Digital Library (CDL). Through the advanced search, you can access information across the CDL, including data and research across species, pests and diseases.

Who is it for?

The PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank is free for everyone to use. It is particularly useful for:

  • Agricultural extension workers 
  • Agro-input dealers 
  • Farmers/growers 
  • Government bodies 
  • Students and teachers in agricultural institutions 

How it works

The PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank contains a vast range of materials including posters, leaflets and factsheets. For ease of use, content can be broken down into the following categories:

These provide more in-depth, technical information on approximately 4000 pests and diseases. They are written by scientists and include information such as lists of host plants, descriptions of symptoms, distribution, and information on impact, prevention, and control.

These are management factsheets with practical information on crop pests/diseases and control. They usually give more in-depth information about a specific management method. They are written by partners in PlantwisePlus countries for use by plant doctors and extension workers who provide advice to farmers. 

If you have a factsheet that you would like us to consider including in the PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank, please submit a factsheet.

These are management factsheets with practical information on crop pest/disease and control, they usually focus on one crop.

  • Green and Yellow Lists are written by partners in PlantwisePlus countries and include information that is specific to the country. Based on a traffic light system, the green sections provide information on prevention, monitoring and physical or biologically-based controls, whilst the yellow sections provide information on chemical controls and their restrictions for safe use. 
  • Green Lists are produced by PlantwisePlus and include only “green” prevention, monitoring and control options that are applicable in any country where the specified pest and crop occur – they do not include “yellow” controls such as pesticides which have local restrictions. They are prepared for use by plant doctors and extension workers. 

These contain expert information from non-PlantwisePlus sources. They usually include some information about the pest, treatment advice and images. These factsheets are aimed at a range of different users and vary in technicality.

These are identification guides that enable users to identify a pest or disease, usually via images or detailed descriptions.

These provide practical information on crop pests/diseases and control in video form. It usually focuses on one pest/disease and may provide a detailed management method.

These provide further access to crop health information from both internal and external sources.

Why CABI created the PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank

The Plantwise Knowledge Bank was launched in 2012 under the Plantwise programme. The platform serves a diverse range of plant-health stakeholders as a central information resource for crop protection. This is achieved by collecting, analysing and disseminating pest data in order to enable: i) identification and management of plant pests; ii) protection against pest and disease threats; and iii) secure storage and analysis of national plant pest data.
 
The development and maintenance of PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank has been made possible with the support of donors to the PlantwisePlus programme.

Factsheets 

Our PlantwisePlus factsheets are written by partners in PlantwisePlus countries specifically for the needs of farmers. They provide a quick outline of how to recognise a crop problem, background information, and step-by-step instructions on how to manage the issue at hand. Factsheets may go into detail about one management technique or may list several practices. Every factsheet is supported by images to help you visualise the problems and solutions. 

Every factsheet is reviewed by a local farmer in the countries where they are written. This ensures the information is easy to understand and practical to use. They are also validated by technical reviewers to check that the recommendations are safe and follow approved scientific principles. 

We work with countries to provide sound advice to farmers, and now this advice is available in your factsheet library wherever you go. 

The content included in the app can also be found on the PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank.

What you'll need

  • A smartphone and/ or tablet 
  • Access to the internet
  • At least 5.3MB of storage available to download the app, plus more to download individual factsheets 

Once the pack has been downloaded, you do not need an internet connection to access the content; however, if you’d like to receive any updates to the content, an occasional internet connection will be required.
